Trini Slangs!

One of my absolute favorite things about Trini people has to be our captivating way of speaking coupled with our unique vernacular. Join me as I try to compile a list of some of my favorite words and phrases in the Trini dialect. 
I will attempt to keep updating this list as I go because every now and then I hear something completely new and I'm dedicated to sharing them with you! 
So I hope you guys enjoy this list of commonly use Trinbagonian words and phrases. 

A

  • Allyuh- All of you, referring to a collective group of people 

B

  • Bacchanal- traditionally this means a wild and drunken party - drama - scandal - large party 
  • Bad eye- A look of anger and reproach- usually looking out of the corner of the eye
  • Bad-John/ Badjon- A bully, troublemaker, criminal 
  • Bam bam- Buttocks,  ass, bottom, behind etc. 
  • Bobolee- Someone who is often taken advantage of or bullied
  • Bol-face/ Bold-face- Pushy, loud, unreasonable
  • Brought-up-sy- The way in which a person is raised- their decorum 
  • Buss-up-shot- A shredded roti skin

C

  • Chupid- Stupid
  • Cokey-eye/ Coki-eye- Cross-eyes
  • Commesse- Confusion, controversy; often associated with gossip and slander
  • Crapaud/ Crapo- From (often larger frogs)
  • Cuff- To hit or punch
  • Cyah- Can't, Cannot

D

  • Dingolay- To dance in a joyful, carefree manner. Also the title of a Calypso sang by the Mighty Shadow
  • Doh- Do not, Don't
  • Doux doux/ Doo doo- Darling, sweetheart 
  • Dotish- Stupid, foolish, silly

E

  • Eh- An exclamation of surprise, sometimes used to add emphasis; Also used for "what did you say?"
  • Eh eh- Often used as an expression for "no"
  • Ent- "Is that not so?"; often used in agreement
