What's In Season

Let's Talk Fruits!

Trinidad and Tobago has been blessed in abundance with a wide variety of fruits and veggies that grow here locally. Now that the July/August (Summer) vacation is approaching, it brings with it some tasty gems just now beginning to bear.

This post I'm gonna let you guys know what you can look forward to and what you can do with them!

Chennette

One of my personal favorites! Nothing compares to the excitement my sister and I feel when we spot the first highway vendor holding the first bunch of Chennette for the season. Inside its rough, outer layer, the pulp is golden orange/ peach in colour. All you have to do is break the skin and begin sucking on the juicy nectar of the Chennette. BUT be careful!! Chennette seeds are large and smooth and can slip down into your throat and pose a severe choking hazard so I advise always monitoring young children while they enjoy this snack!

How else you can enjoy these:

  • Chennette Chow: Enjoy with some salt, pepper, chadon beni and you're good to go
  • Chennette Juice: The nectar of this fruit provides the perfect thirst quencher on a hot day

Zaboca/Avocado

Zaboca is the local name for Avocados here in T&T and yes! they are a fruit. The most common way to enjoy this fruit is simply by cutting it into slices and enjoying it with a plate of food.

How else you can enjoy:
  • Guacamole
  • With only salt and black paper
  • Many even use it as a helpful hair and face mask

Pommerac

This fruit is known by many names depending on what country you're in but here in T&T it is Pommerac. It is a red, pear-shaped fruit with a large avocado-like seed in the center. Thought the outer skin is red in colour, the fruit itself is fully white. These are a perfect refreshing snack for anyone during the July/August vacation period.

  • Pommerac chow
  • Pommerac juice

Mangoes

Now the overall, undisputed crowed favorite has definitely got to be Mangoes! Starch mango, Julie Mango, Doux Doux and Rose Mango are just a few of our local gems that are just beginning to bear. Nothing beats the smell of cutting into a ripe, freshly picked mango. Mangoes are great just by themselves but they're also one of the most versatile fruits in my opinion.

How else can you enjoy these:
  • Mango Chow: enjoy with some seasoning, salt and pepper for the tastiest summer snack
  • Red Mango: A common snack of preserved mango slices enjoyed in T&T (Recipe coming soon)
  • Curry Mango
  • Mango Smoothies
  • Mango sorbets
This list for this versatile fruit really can go on and on, so I'll stop here for now
But let me know what your favorite fruit for the season is and what's your favorite way to eat them!
